More than just a number

It’s easy to look at social media for numbers: the number of followers, the number of posts, the number of likes, the number of comments, the number of messages and the list goes on.

I’ve been trying to shift my eyes away from the numerical value of my Instagram account and instead focus on each person who has chosen to follow me. What am I giving each individual person? Am I being a means of inspiration to enjoy life? Am I outpouring all the positivity that is built up inside of me bursting to be shared?

There’s something about going through each person on social media and asking yourself if you can do more for them as opposed to just posting once a day, going back to scrolling aimlessly and waiting for the likes to pile up.

Instead of comparing your account to another, why not compliment them on their feed? Instead of focusing on making photos 100% aesthetically pleasing, (not that there’s anything wrong with that), why not be real and actually get to know the people who read your posts? Why not let them know that although this is a casual platform for portraying talent, it is also a means of reaching out?

If you hadn’t noticed yet, I’m basically directing these questions to myself too.
I’m trying to convince myself that making myself accountable here is going to help me follow my own advice.

So here’s me telling you that I’m more than an Instagram account.
I am and you are a child of God, with an identity in Christ and if I can help you in any way, I am more than willing to be there for you.
It’s time to stop looking at the numbers.
It’s time to establish relationships and take the time to grow in them.

Because, honey, you and I are more than just a number.
Remember that.

Stay rad,
Szm 🤙
